Special Cheers was
created by a blessing of
distress. In 2002,
Sensory Connections
(which was a for profit
organization) was in
business on Brittmoore
and Tanner road just
down the street from Special Cheers
current home.
Sensory Connections had
been helping children
for 6 years, 2 of which
were on Tanner Road.
The property was being
leased from a family
that had had it up for
sale since 1963 with
minimal possibilities of
it being sold.
On July 3, 2002, the
Sensory Connections
staff were notified by
phone that the property
had sold and this would
start the 30 day
notice.
Where were the pig, cow,
rabbits, chickens and
turkeys going to go
along with the horses?
After frantic searching
and praying, the idea
came up about the Army
Corp of Engineers.
A couple of phone calls
were made and it was
said that the perfect
piece of land just a
mile down the road was
open but to move
immediately the
organization would have
to be Non for Profit.
Thus Special Cheers was
born (Special Children
with Horses for
Evaluation, Education,
Rehabilitation, and
Socialization).
Through the prayer and
hard work by many,
Special Cheers was able
to obtain its 501 (c) 3
organizational status by
September 31, 2002. The
organization was up and
running by October 6,
2002.
When Special Cheers
moved onto the property
on Clay Road, there was
only a hull of a barn.
On top of this there
were no roads, running
water, electricity, and
no covering over head.
One month after the
move, the flood of
November 2002 came upon
the
property. The horses and animals were
all standing in water
everywhere they went.
However the staff and
families of Special
Cheers continued to
focus on the future and
overcame all of these
hurdles.

will be need for
additional staffing to
be able to provide for
more children.

therapy programs that
enhance the functional
components
of daily living.
Special Cheers has
completely been built
without any debt
therefore, there is less
stress encountered and
